Only as complex as it needs to be.
Every project has different needs. I start with how it will be used, its data and the team’s capacity. Being able to explain why a system works the way it does matters more to me than the name of the technology behind it.
Good infrastructure gives the team room to move.
Know the way back when something fails.
A system also needs a plan for failure: how we notice a problem, what information we look at and how we restore service. Monitoring, backups and clear documentation belong in everyday work.
Understand what you automate.
Automation and AI-assisted exploration can save the team time. I still need to know what a command changes, which access it needs and how to reverse it. Moving quickly and staying in control can go together.
